About This

• Scabiosa atropurpurea, or commonly known as Pincushion Flower, is a great addition to the cutting garden. The name is given because the stamens protrude from the center of the flower giving it a pincushion-like appearance.
• Pincushion flower is a 32 inch tall annual growing in USDA z ones 3 - 8.
• This variety, Double Purple, has rich purple colored blooms, and it has long strong stems that make it great for cutting. Deadhead the spent blooms, and Scabiosa will perform all summer long for lots of color and blooms to cut for arrangements.
• If a few spent blooms are left, it will often self-sow for next year’s display. Pincushion seed can be started indoors 8 – 10 weeks before the last frost. Or, for areas with a very long growing season, start the seed outdoors after danger of frost has passed.
• Sowing Rate: 3 - 4 seeds per plant. Do not cover the seeds but gently press them into the soil. Keep seed moist until germination. With a temperature of 70F, germination is usually within 30 days. Space the plants 12 - 18 inches apart. Grow this annual in full sun to partial shade and in moist but well-draining soil.
